When we say "PVC," we’re usually talking about PVC Tarpaulin. This isn’t just a simple sheet of plastic. It’s a composite material. What materials are used in inflatable structures?

For rigid inflatable structures like platforms, yoga mats, or stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), we use a material called Drop Stitch Fabric. It has thousands of internal threads that pull the top and bottom surfaces taut, creating a surprisingly flat and hard surface when inflated.

Drop stitch technology is a game-changer. I remember the first time we made a prototype for an inflatable stage platform. When it was deflated, it was just a roll of fabric.   • Performance: It’s also more flexible and resistant to cold than PVC, so it won’t crack in low temperatures.

The downside? TPU is significantly more expensive and harder to work with than PVC, so you only see it in high-end or specialized products where its unique properties are essential.


How many years do inflatables last?

Are you worried your new inflatable will be a one-season wonder? The material is the single biggest factor in determining its lifespan. A cheap choice now often means buying a whole new unit next year.
